London
Like many UK travelers we began our trip in London, as I have said we stayed at the Francisian Sisters of the Heart of Jesus's guest house (ain't that a mouth full). Its a great place to stay in a fantastic location. We arrived at Gatwick around lunch time and caught a train into London, as we had only traveled from Rome we did not have jet lag to contend with, we had already battled our way through that, a week earlier when we arrived in Rome were we dropped in on an old friend.

- I am a single mum with a 9yr old son and I love to travel. I had traveled to Europe and the USA many years ago, and in the last year or so I decided it was time to travel again. My son is at the perfect age to do so and I wasn't going to let lack of money stop me. I have been single since before my son was born and I wasn't married, so I had no marriage settlement money or other nest egg to help me. I was only working part time, but taking on more hours at work every chance I could. My dream was to take my son backpacking from North to South and East to West across the UK. It took us two months traveling and a year of planning; but we did it and it was great!

Quick Money Saving Tips
- Travel in the off season.
- When taking money out of ATMs get enough to last for awhile the less transactions the less fees.
- Libraries are great for free internet access, and the kids can play (read) in the children's area. A few moments peace for us grown ups.
- The supermarket Sainsburys has good cheap hot food, but shop before 5pm as they do sell out
- Haggle over accommodation
- Become a member of English Heritage
- Purchase a family rail card
- Buy a London Pass
- Ask about Super Savers when purchasing bus tickets
- For a quick cheap lunch look for a bakery much cheaper than a pub
- Car parking is very expensive in Britain all carparks are pay and display, except for most of the supermarket carparks so park there.
- Many of the larger towns have Park and Ride carparks. These are cheap and it takes all the hassle out of finding parking. Just leave your car in the carpark and take the bus into town then back to your car again. They run often and there is never a long wait before the next bus comes along.
- Explain to the kids, this holiday is not one big shopping trip, photo's and memories are what they will come away with. We did decide to collect patches (the ones you iron or sew on) they are only €1 - 2 and we made a great wall hanging with them
